T he edge detection of an image is a terminology in image processing, especially in the areas of feature extraction, to refer to algorithms which aim at identifying point in digital image at which the image brightnes s changes abruptly. The data of edge detection is very large, so the speed of image processing is a difficult problem.

The Canny edge detection operator was developed by John F. Canny in 1986 and uses a multi- stage algorithm to detect a wide range of edges in images. In addition, canny edge detector is a complex optimal edge detector which takes significantly longer time in result computations.

With mobile platform development there are more and more Android-based image processing applications. The principles of four kinds of edge detection algorithms are analyzed in this paper and such algorithms are realized by adopting JNI technology based on android platform. At last the effect and efficiency of such algorithms are also compared and summarized.

In this paper our proposed algorithm try to solve the tracking problem based on edge (contour) of the object to track it (i.e. we extracting the contour of the target and detect it among the whole sequence of frames using a mean of edge detection technique.

Edge detection is in the forefront of image processing for object detection, it is crucial to have a good understanding of edge detection algorithms. Sobel which is a popular edge detection algorithm is considered in this work. There exists a function, edge.m which is in the image toolbox. In the edge function, the Sobel method uses the derivative approximation to find edges.

The research paper below gives analyses of different kinds of edge detection algorithms, with gradient structure, observed on a bit-plane model. Even though each bit contains certain part of information of the image, different algorithms for edge detection of the image do not perform identically, which is proved on a practical example of this work.
